About Us The Food Workshop comprises a fully equipped domestic and commercial kitchen located in Birkenhead on the Wirral Peninsula - across the River Mersey from Liverpool. The Food Workshop is a way to improve your culinary skills, make new friends who share your love of good food and bring home knowledge of lasting value. Our classes are geared to teaching a variety of methods and techniques that can be adapted to different foods and dishes. Rather than simply following recipes, you will gain an understanding of how and why ingredients go together, what to look for in buying food products, and which cooking methods are appropriate in different situations. We place our emphasis on imparting information, developing techniques and improving cooking skills. We only provide hands-on practical classes, necessary for learning correct techniques, in which each participant prepares the meal. At the outset and during the course of the day we begin each new section with a short lecture that may cover the history, nutritional value, and cultural significance of each course, along with a demonstration of specific techniques that will be used. All recipes are suitable for home cooking. Peter H. Roberts is the owner and principal of the Food Workshop. He is self taught and has been an amateur cook for over 40 years. Upon leaving Grammar school in 1967, he attended Manchester University and worked in commerce before an opportunity arose to take a sabbatical in 1994. He attended Leith’s School of Food and Wine, full-time, gaining a Diploma in 1995, before setting up the Food Workshop. Each student has his or her own workstation and utensils. We have an AGA cooker, as well as a domestic gas/electric and a heavy-duty commercial cooker. All our equipment, including copper saucepans, is commercial quality. The cost includes instruction; all ingredients, an apron and a folder containing the course recipes are supplied. There are a maximum number of 6 students. A light lunch, coffee and tea are also provided. Registration In the interest of health and safety, we ask all students to wear long trousers; closed shoes with rubber soles and to tie back long hair. Please leave jewellery at home and do not wear perfume. If in doubt, please call us and we will be happy to advise you. |
